James Comer Signals Retreat On Biden Impeachment – Says He Doesn’t Want More Hearings

A month ago, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) opened formal hearings as part of an impeachment inquiry into alleged illegal bribes paid to President Joe Biden, making some grandiose claims and insisting that he had found evidence that would make Biden’s impeachment a fait accompli.

At the first hearing, Comer made some bold statements, the Washington Post reported at the time.

In his opening statement, Comer alleged that Biden has for years “lied to the American people about his knowledge of and participation in his family’s corrupt business schemes.” Comer accused Biden of having developed relationships with his family’s foreign business targets.

“These business targets include foreign oligarchs who sent millions of dollars to his family,” he said. “It also includes a Chinese national who wired a quarter of a million dollars to his son.”

However, it soon became clear that Comer had no actual evidence, just unsupported allegations, rumors, and hearsay.

But in the course of just a month, Comer’s tune has changed dramatically, and he’s now suggesting he probably won’t hold more hearings on impeachment, Philip Bump of the Post notes.

“I don’t know that I want to hold any more hearings, to be honest with you,” Comer said while speaking to reporters on Capitol Hill last week. He complained that it was hard to keep members present for hours on end, given that so many had other commitments. Instead, he said, he preferred depositions, which “you can do more with.”

Wow! How’s that for an about-face?

Comer’s remarks are especially odd considering that Thursday evening new Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) told Fox host Sean Hannity that he’s impressed with the oversight committee’s work.

“I know people are getting anxious and they’re getting restless and they just want somebody to be impeached. But that’s not — we don’t do that like the other team. We have to base it upon the evidence, and the evidence is coming together. We’ll see where it leads.”

What in the world is going on here?

Well, there’s the simple fact that holding hearings means Comer and his fellow Republicans have to do more than just sit and go on long harangues about how they’re certain the president broke the law even though they don’t have a shred of evidence.

And then there’s Comer’s mention of depositions, which “you can do more with.”

What Comer is hinting at is putting people under oath and even if they don’t provide any damning facts, he and others in the GOP can still hint that they’re making progress, knowing they don’t have to provide the goods because the depositions are part of an ongoing investigation and will remain secret.

Just a hint of wrongdoing is all Comer and his GOP buddies need to try and draw a false equivalency between Biden and Donald Trump, who has 91 criminal charges hanging over his head.

There’s no need to actually impeach Biden. All Comer needs is enough bullshit to tar the president and keep his bogus “investigation” going.

It’d be tempting to call the whole ordeal smoke and mirrors. But it’s nowhere near that sophisticated. It’s just a smokescreen using fumes from the already deceased horse the GOP can’t resist beating over and over again.

Jamie Raskin Hilariously Trolls Republicans As ‘Flying Monkeys On A Mission For The Wicked Witch’

With a government shutdown now just 48 hours away, Republicans in the House of Representatives decided today would be the perfect time to being their sham impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden, even though their own witnesses admit there isn’t enough evidence to impeach Biden.

As the inquiry was beginning this morning, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), who just so happens to be a a former constitutional law professor, let the GOP have it, verbally lashing them and branding them as little more than enablers for ex-president Donald Trump, noting:

“Like flying monkeys on a mission for the Wicked Witch of the West, Trump’s followers in the House now carry his messages out to the world: shut down the government, shutdown the prosecutions. But the cultmaster has another command for his followers, which brings us here today.”

The Maryland Democrat was only getting warmed up, and he let the nation know exactly what his Republican counterparts are really all about.

“So let’s get it straight. We’re 62 hours away from shutting down the government of the United States of America. And Republicans are launching an impeachment drive based on a long debunked and discredited lie. No foreign enemy’s ever been able to shut down the government of the United States but now MAGA Republicans are about to do just that. But they don’t want to cut off public services to people and tonight, paychecks to more than a million service members, without first launching impeachment drive, even when they don’t have a shred of evidence against President Biden for an impeachable offense.”

Need proof? Raskin asked. Just consider the words of the few rational members of the GOP have been saying about the impeachment inquiry over the past week or so.

“Here’s what some Republicans have had to say over the last week about the actions of the Republicans, as they watch up close ‘the dysfunction caucus at work,’ in the words of our GOP colleague from Nebraska, Don Bacon, ‘clown show,’ ‘foolishness,’ ‘terribly misguided,’ ‘stupidity,’ ‘failure to lead,’ ‘lunatics,’ ‘disgraceful,’ .new low,’ ‘pathetic,’ ‘enabling Chairman Xi,’ ‘people that have serious issues,’ ‘those folks don’t have a plan,’ ‘show just how broken they are, and ‘individuals that just want to burn the whole place down.'”

Raskin concluded his comments with a flourish.

“So we move from a Trump-ordered government shutdown to a Trump-ordered impeachment process, and yet back into reality-based world the majority sits completely empty-handed with no evidence of any presidential wrongdoing. No smoking gun, no gun, no smoke. In fact, we have had to slide awkwardly into a House impeachment process without the benefit of the floor vote that Speaker McCarthy insisted was absolutely imperative and necessary when Donald Trump was impeached.”

WATCH A Reporter Shred A House Republican’s So-Called ‘Evidence’ Against Joe Biden

Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, got fact-checked on live TV during a press conference by an NBC reporter, and video of the exchange has gone viral on social media.

Presenting what he claimed was “evidence” of illegal activity by President Joe Biden, Smith began making all sorts of wild allegations, HuffPost reports.

“Smith … claimed the committee had “over 700 pages of examples where people should be very concerned.”

But NBC reporter Ryan Nobles was having none of the dog and pony show Smith was leading, and he immediately began peppering Smith with facts and questions that severely undercut the congressman’s claims.

The reporter wondered about the relevance of a WhatsApp message Hunter Biden allegedly sent in 2017, when Donald Trump was the U.S. president and Joe Biden hadn’t yet announced his 2020 presidential run.

“If he’s not the president or the vice president at that time, where’s the wrongdoing? He wasn’t even a candidate for president at that time,” Nobles asked.

Smith tried to counter: “He was a candidate.”

Actually, Biden didn’t announce his candidacy until 2019, which makes Smith a liar.

Rather than admit his mistake, Smith inquired of Nobles, “What source are you with?”

NBC, Nobles replied, to which Smith whined, “So, apparently you’ll never believe us.”

Nobles retorted:

“You presented a piece of evidence that you say came on August 6th, 2017, that demonstrates that Joe Biden was using political influence to help his son. But he wasn’t a political figure at that time. The first WhatsApp message you put up — how does that demonstrate that there was some sort of political influence being put over him if, at that time, he is not a political, not an elected official?”

Getting more exasperated by the second, Smith told Nobles he wasn’t about to “pinpoint one item.” But as Nobles reminded him, “You presented it! It was [the] first thing that you brought up.”

Perhaps sensing that he was only making matters worse, Smith turned away from Nobles and told the other reporters, “I’ll take the next question.”

The so-called “impeachment inquiry” being conducted by House Republicans is nothing more than an attempt to distract from the fact that their leading presidential candidate, Donald Trump, stands accused of 91 criminal counts in four separate jurisdictions. And their actions are backfiring on them in humiliating fashion.

GOP’s Impeachment Inquiry Of Biden Starting To Collapse As New Evidence Clears Him

As House Republicans continue to move ahead with their impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden, new evidence is completely undercutting their narrative of why they think Biden has committed high crimes and misdemeanors.

James Bickerton of Newsweek reports that the central element the GOP’s so-called “case” against the president has collapsed, leaving them with no logical explanation for their sham investigation other than to divert attention from the multiple legal problems facing failed former president Donald Trump, who has been indicted on 91 criminal counts in four separate jurisdictions.

Republican efforts to impeach President Joe Biden suffered a blow after fresh evidence emerged showing his bid to remove Ukrainian Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin in 2015 represented U.S. government policy.

Then-Vice President Biden met Petro Poroshenko, the Ukrainian president at the time, in December 2015, after which he claimed he’d threatened to withhold $1 billion in U.S. aid to Kyiv, unless Shokin was removed from his post, which he subsequently was.

Some conservatives have suggested Biden was attempting to protect Ukrainian energy company Burisma, the board of which his son, Hunter Biden, had joined in 2014, by moving against Shokin. However a pre-meeting memo prepared for Biden by the State Department, dated November 25, 2015, made it clear that removing Shokin was the Obama administration’s policy.

Biden was merely following the administration’s policy when it came to Shokin’s ouster, not trying to enrich himself or his son.

Biden himself has been clear exactly what he said regarding Shokin and why he insisted on him being removed as prosecutor in the Burisma case, remarking:

“I said, you’re not getting the billion. I’m going to be leaving here in, I think it was about six hours. I looked at them and said: I’m leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor is not fired, you’re not getting the money.
“Well, son of a b****. He got fired. And they put in place someone who was solid at the time.”

Shokin, however, maintains that there was a quid pro quo, telling Fox News that he was booted from his office “Well, son of a b****. He got fired. And they put in place someone who was solid at the time.

But Shokin’s accusation is seriously undercut by a complete lack of documentation proving that Shokin was actively investigating Burisma at the time he was removed from his post for allegedly being corrupt.

Despite there being no evidence of any wrongdoing by President Biden, Republicans continue to move forward with their inquiry, which is starting to look like little more than a political game designed to damage the man who beat Donald Trump like a drum in the 2020 election.

Biden Has The Perfect Three-Word Response To GOP Calls For His Impeachment

On Tuesday, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy announced that he would instruct the relevant committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, even though he has yet to lay out a shred of evidence that ties the president to any high crimes or misdemeanors.

In his statement to the media, CNN notes, McCarthy tried to justify the move.

“These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption,” the California Republican said in remarks outside his office on Capitol Hill. “They warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives. That’s why today I am directing our House (committees) to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.”

The House-led GOP investigations have yet to provide any direct evidence that the president financially benefited from Hunter Biden’s career overseas.

McCarthy is also skirting House rules by not calling for a formal vote of the full House to determine if a majority support an inquiry. That’s because the Speaker knows he doesn’t have the votes needed to pass such a motion, and losing on a vote would be devastating to him as he attempts to fight off extremist right-wingers in the GOP caucus who are eager to get payback for the two impeachments of failed former president Donald Trump.

Though the White House has made a few carefully worded comments on the impeachment inquiry, with spokesperson Ian Sams calling it “extreme politics at its worst,” Biden had remained mum.

Until today, that is.

As he returned to the White House on Sunday, Biden was asked about the inquiry by reporters. His response was curt and to the point.

“Lots of luck!”

Dark Brandon knows exactly how to troll the GOP.
