Kevin McCarthy Gets Dragged On Twitter For His Bizarre ‘Electric Cord Of Liberty’ Remark

Everywhere you turned today, Republicans were lining up to loudly whine about remarks made by President Joe Biden about “MAGA Republicans” who put their loyalty to one man over doing what’s best for the country.

But it was something House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said prior to the president’s speech that left many scratching their heads. Here’s the part of his speech that was so confusing:

“The American experiment and the good people who believe in it have not said their last word. The electric cord of liberty still sparks in our hearts. The spirit of the Pilgrims, the Patriots and the Pioneers still inspire our souls. Our best days are ahead of us, not behind us. Our nation can flourish again and under a new historic Republican majority.”

Umm…what? Electric cord of liberty? Does that connect to the pedestal fan of freedom or is it only to be used for the hair dryer of justice? So many questions!

It would appear, according to HuffPost, that McCarthy was trying to reference Abraham Lincoln:

The electric cord reference seemingly harks back to an 1858 Abraham Lincoln speech in which Lincoln said the Declaration of Independence “links the hearts of patriotic and liberty-loving men together” like an electric cord through the generations.

Sure, we all learned that in history class, right? If McCarthy wanted to pay tribute to Honest Abe, he should have said that’s where he got his electric cord reference.

Instead, we’re left to wonder what the purpose of the line was, which certainly set off lots of debate on Twitter. Take a look:

Kevin McCarthy Tried To Troll Dr. Fauci And Wound Up Mocking Trump Instead

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) probably thought he had the perfect line to troll Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and chief medical adviser to the president, who announced that he would be retiring after over 50 years as one the nation’s top experts on disease.

Appearing on Fox News, McCarthy told host Jesse Watters:

“I just have one rule of thumb: I really don’t trust anyone that keeps a mural of themselves in their office. I just think those types of individuals should have to come and answer the questions.”

HuffPost reports that Dr. Fauci does indeed have a portrait of himself in his office:

The Fauci image was painted in 2020 by singer/songwriter/artist Joan Baez to honor him as someone who has “made meaningful social change without the use of violence.”

However, there is a person who has portraits of himself painted and pays for them, although usually not with his own money: Disgraced ex-president Donald Trump.

Trump has a large portrait of himself at his Mar-a-Lago resort and famously lined the walls of his New York office with magazine covers featuring his visage. His post-presidential office even features a small statue of Trump.

That boomeranged badly on McCarthy, who is already under fire from Trump. The failed, one-term former president recently called him “very very foolish” for failing to appoint Republicans to the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection.

McCarthy was thoroughly mocked on Twitter for his “trust” declaration.

Kevin McCarthy Asks If Americans Are Better Off Than 2 Years Ago And Gets His A*s Handed To Him

During debate Friday on the Inflation Reduction Act, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) borrowed a line from former president Ronald Reagan that quickly came back and bit him squarely on the ass.

HuffPost reports:

In a speech on the House floor, McCarthy asked, “Is America better off today than they were two years ago?” which referenced a question Reagan asked during a 1980 presidential debate with then-President Jimmy Carter.

McCarthy’s memory, however, must indeed be very short, because as Twitter users quickly reminded him, two years ago the United States (and the entire planet) were in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic which has so far killed over a million Americans.

The impact of the COVID pandemic was magnified in the U.S. in large part because then-president Donald Trump refused for months to acknowledge the seriousness of the disease and told the country it would dissipate as soon as the weather grew warmer in the spring and summer.

Trump also suggested using disinfectant inside the body to destroy the virus and infusions of “light” into people to counter the disease.

While McCarthy’s question was clearly meant to be rhetorical, he was pelted with responses for the complete tone-deafness of what he said.

Matt Gaetz’s Latest Tweets Sound A Lot Like Death Threats Aimed At Kevin McCarthy

Something very strange is going on with Florida Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz, and it doesn’t bode well for how he’ll respond on the day indictments for child sex trafficking are handed down against him and he’s facing the prospect of life in prison.

Gaetz posted three tweets earlier today that on the surface seem like little more than a vapid commentary on a Newsweek article he came across with the title “All-male cheetah pack kill leader in bloody coup.”

That prompted the Florida congressman to follow-up with this:

Cheetahs and House Leadership races, huh? Well, the current leader of House Republicans is Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who said Wednesday he agrees with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) that the January 6 attack on the Capitol was indeed “a violent insurrection.”

It’s tempting to say that Gaetz was aiming his tweets at McConnell, but he referenced “House Leadership races,” so that narrows down who he’s referring to.

No matter how you look at it, however, it sounds like a direct threat of some violent action that Gaetz is formulating, even though the chance he’ll still be a free man when such decisions are made is fading by the day, because another person with knowledge of the accusations against Gaetz has now entered a guilty plea and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors, according to Politico:

A Florida collectibles dealer connected to the federal investigation into Rep. Matt Gaetz formally entered a guilty plea in Orlando on Wednesday, marking another twist in the ongoing probe into the Republican congressman.

Joe Ellicott, known as “Big Joe,” pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy to commit fraud and drug charges and has agreed to cooperate with federal authorities. Ellicott is a relatively minor figure in the ongoing Gaetz probe but was listed on a federal grand jury subpoena in December 2020 along with Gaetz and several other men.

Here’s some free advice for Kevin McCarthy in light of the Gaetz’s tweets: You might want to increase your security detail and keep a close eye on the perv from Florida.

McCarthy: Trump Told Me He Has ‘Some Responsibility’ For The Capitol Insurrection

Remarks made by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) are coming back to haunt him and failed, one-term former President Donald Trump, who allegedly told McCarthy that he does indeed bear “some responsibility” for the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection which left five people dead.

According to CNN:

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said publicly and privately in the days following the deadly riots at the US Capitol that President Donald Trump admitted personally bearing some responsibility for the attack — one of several reasons why the select committee on January 6 wants to hear from the House’s top Republican.

“I say he has responsibility,” McCarthy said on KERN, a local radio station in Bakersfield, California, on January 12 of last year. “He told me personally that he does have some responsibility. I think a lot of people do.”

McCarthy’s comments — as well as those made by Trump while speaking with the congressman — may indeed wind up as part of the evidence the Jan. 6 committee uses if and when they make criminal referrals to the Justice Department.

Could it be any clearer that McCarthy has repeatedly lied about conversations he had with Trump and others about the insurrection? The ex-president knows those conversations also took place, and that means he’s also in significant legal jeopardy and could easily be charged with seditious conspiracy, inciting a riot, and interfering with the official business of Congress.

So far, McCarthy has insisted he won’t cooperate with the committee, but a subpoena could change his mind, especially if he’s facing two years in prison for contempt of Congress:

On Thursday, McCarthy defended his decision not to cooperate with the select committee despite previously voicing support for a bipartisan commission and also saying he’d cooperate with any investigation. McCarthy said he made those comments before Speaker Nancy Pelosi decided to “play politics” with the select committee by vetoing two picks, Rep. Jim Jordan and Jim Banks.

And even if McCarthy remains steadfast in his refusal to speak with the Jan. 6 panel, his previous utterances — such as the interview CNN just unearthed — can be used against both him and Trump in criminal proceedings.
