House Republicans Are Actively Discussing Dumping Kevin McCarthy As Speaker

The honeymoon is officially over with, and House Republicans are now actively considering kicking Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to the curb, according to a report from Axios.

On Thursday, The New York Times reported that McCarthy had sniped at members of his GOP leadership team.

According to The Times, McCarthy said behind closed doors that his top lieutenant, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) is “ineffective, checked out and reluctant to take a position on anything.”

McCarthy also reportedly called Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-TX), Chairman of the House Budget Committee, “incompetent.”

Those remarks have led some powerful House Republicans to suggest McCarthy may need to be replaced, Axios reports.

Some angry GOP lawmakers warn that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s position could be on rocky ground after a report he blamed members of his leadership team for Republicans’ chaos over the budget.

[…]

What they’re saying: A GOP lawmaker accused McCarthy of using Scalise and Arrington as scapegoats before budget and debt ceiling negotiations have fully imploded.

  • “The members I’ve spoken with are just stunned by his rebuking of his budget chair, and certainly of our leadership,” another House Republican told Axios.
  • “I can’t imagine [he will last an entire term].”

Of course, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that’s been paying attention McCarthy is facing a sudden exit from the Speaker’s chair. After all, it took 15 ballots before he was able to obtain the votes needed for the post. Getting rid of him will be significantly easier, but it does raise the question of who might replace him.

The most frequently mentioned names to keep in mind if indeed McCarthy is ousted are Scalise, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), and Elise Stefanik (R-NY). But could any of them muster the votes necessary to replace McCarthy?

Right now, it appears the House GOP is right where many predicted they’d be: Running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

Fox Host Slams House Republicans For Trying To ‘Intimidate’ Manhattan DA With Threats

Now that it seems almost certain that failed, one-term, twice-impeached former president Donald Trump will indeed be indicted by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg sometime this week, Republicans in the House of Representatives are trying to harass and threaten Bragg, demanding that he appear before various committees to explain why he’s bringing charges against the failed ex-president.

For example, on Monday, ABC News reports, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) insisted that Bragg show up on Capitol Hill and bring thousands of documents with him. Sending him a letter that read, in part:

“You are reportedly about to engage in an unprecedented abuse of prosecutorial authority: the indictment of a former President of the United States and current declared candidate for that office.”

And Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) also attacked Bragg, telling reporters, “What we see before us is a political game being played by a local … Look this isn’t New York City, this is just a Manhattan, this is just a borough DA. Okay?”

Intimidation and attempting to demean a duly elected DA. And yet the GOP wants to be known as the party of “law and order”? Sure, as long as the law doesn’t apply to any Republicans.

All of this led Fox News host Neil Cavuto to excoriate House Republicans on his Tuesday show.

Speaking with former federal prosecutor Kevin O’Brien, Cavuto noted:

“I mean, everyone is entitled to their opinion whether he’s overreaching his legal hand. But in this case here, if you’re talking about a guy who you say is weaponizing and going way beyond the legal areas that he should as a local prosecutor, then surely the House risks doing the same if it tries to drag him before them to argue the point and essentially to intimidate him.”

O’Brien agreed:

“Right, as my mother used to say, two wrongs don’t make a right. And this certainly does escalate the situation in ways that aren’t helpful.”

Cavuto added:

“I don’t have an axe to grind in all this, Kevin. But I do wonder if the House risks looking like it’s doing the bidding of Donald Trump by creating an even bigger circus that they hope to avoid when they talk about Alvin Bragg’s circus.

“And that this perpetuates the notion that whatever Donald Trump wants, he gets. And Republicans will do his bidding.”

House GOP Tweets And Then Deletes Attack On Jan. 6 Witness Sarah Matthews After Recalling They Recently Hired Her

As former Trump administration staffer Sarah Matthews was still testifying before the House January 6 committee on Thursday evening, the official House Republican Twitter account fired off a nasty attack against her, even though she works for them.

According to HuffPost:

“Just another liar and pawn in Pelosi’s witch-hunt,” the House Republican account tweeted, referring to Sarah Matthews, an aide who was working in the White House during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot.

She is currently the Republican communications director for the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis.

Oops! Nothing quite like slamming one of your own.

It should be noted that during her testimony Thursday, Matthews corroborated what former top aide Cassidy Hutchinson had told the Jan. 6 committee when she appeared last month.

A spokesperson for the House GOP told Politico that the tweet was deleted because, “The tweet was sent out at the staff level and was not authorized or the position of the conference and therefore was deleted.”

The real reason, however, was probably the chiding the GOP received online, including this one from another former member of the Trump administration:

Memo to House GOP: You need to delete your Twitter account and quit lying about how none of you are watching the hearings.
