Six months ago, House Republicans announced they were starting an impeachment inquiry into alleged “high crimes and misdemeanors” committed by President Joe Biden which they claimed would result in his removal from office.
Now, however, it appears Republicans have nothing to show for their efforts except a hell of a lot of egg on their faces, with Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) making it clear this week that he has no interest in bringing the matter to the floor of the House for an impeachment vote that would fail in humiliating fashion.
According to McKay Coppins of the Atlantic, the mood of GOPers in Congress has grown exceedingly dark.
Coppins was a guest on MSNBC’s “The Weekend” earlier today, and he explained, “I think the White House smelled blood in the water, right? They saw Republicans were losing their will to continue with this.”
“I mean, you talk to Republicans on the Hill and they know that this is over, right?” he continued. “A lot of them knew it was a farce from the beginning but they were going along and saying what we can we dredge up? It was a fishing expedition on how to hurt President Biden during an election year but their star witness has fallen apart.”
Coppins added, “The impeachment has fallen apart in pretty embarrassing fashion. That’s why you see people like Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) just kind of completely demoralized. By all accounts, the [GOP] House conference was especially demoralized and embarrassed. You see Republicans wanting to retire and leave. I think the White House saw that.”
Just like everything they do in lieu of actually governing, today’s Republican Party is nothing but a vehicle for petty grievances, political payback, and childish whining. In other words, they’re just like the clown they’ve allowed to hijack their party and are preparing to nominate as their presidential candidate for the third time.
