Musk Tells Employees Twitter’s Economic Picture Is ‘Dire’ And The Site May Go Under

Though he’s owned Twitter for a little over two weeks, Elon Musk is already warning that the social media site has a “dire” economic picture and may not survive the economic downturn that is threatening to leave the company bankrupt, CNBC reports.

In an email Musk sent to the employees he hasn’t already fired, he writes:

Frankly, the economic picture ahead is dire especially for a company like ours that is so dependent on advertising in a challenging economic climate. Moreover, 70% of our advertising is brand, rather than specific performance, which makes us doubly vulnerable!

The introduction leads to a mention of pushing subscriptions as a way to save the site from collapse, though it remains to be seen if enough Twitter users would be willing to pay a monthly fee to have a “verified” account.

That is why the priority over the past ten days has been to develop and launch Twitter Blue Verified subscriptions (huge props to the team!).

Without significant subscription revenue, there is a good chance Twitter will not survive the upcoming economic downturn. We need roughly half of our revenue to be subscription.

Just how serious is the financial picture at Twitter, which Musk paid $44 billion to acquire? The New York Times has reported on the deal, which was done with heavy financial leverage and a massive debt load.

To finance his Twitter deal, he loaded the company with $13 billion in debt, putting it on the hook to pay more than $1 billion annually in interest alone.

But last year Twitter had less than $1 billion in cash flow, partly because of a one-time charge, meaning it generated less money than what it now owes its lenders annually. The company was also unprofitable for eight of the last 10 years. So, to make ends meet, Mr. Musk must boost Twitter’s revenue or cut costs — or do both.

Musk is also losing a fortune on his other business, Tesla Motors, CNN reports, noting that shares of the company have taken a major hit since Musk announced he was cutting the price of his cars in China.

Tesla has cut starting prices for its Model 3 and Model Y cars by as much as 9% in China, reversing a trend of increases across the industry amid signs of softening demand in the world’s largest auto market.

The price cuts, posted in listings on the electric vehicle giant’s China website on Monday, are the first by Tesla in China in 2022, and come after Tesla began offering limited incentives to buyers who opted for Tesla’s insurance last month.

Shares of Tesla (TSLA) fell nearly 4% in US premarket trading on the report about lower prices for its cars in China. Shares are down 40% so far this year through Friday’s close.

Sounds like Elon Musk is about as good of a “businessman” as failed, one-term former president Donald Trump.

Kathy Griffin Claps Back After Elon Musk Suspends Her Twitter Account

On Sunday, Twitter CEO Elon Musk got his feelings hurt by comedian Kathy Griffin, so he suspended her account despite his claims of restoring free speech on the social media platform he purchased for $44 billion 10 days ago.

NBC News reports that Griffin dared to mock Musk, which led him to take the action.

Comedian Kathy Griffin’s Twitter account was suspended Sunday, the same day she changed her page’s title to “Elon Musk” and mocked the new CEO.

It wasn’t clear whether the suspension was permanent or a direct result of her mockery. It came as Musk announced that accounts that impersonate celebrities and other notables would be prohibited unless they’re labeled “parody.”

Others were also booted from the site for impersonating.

Griffin, however, got the last work on Musk’s suspension of her account in a novel way, according to HuffPost.

She then resurrected her deceased mother’s account to proclaim “Free Kathy” and trigger a war of words with the world’s richest man.

On her late mother’s account, Griffin went after Musk, verbally eviscerating him and his new “policy” of suspending all accounts that impersonate others but fail to carry a warning that they’re “parody.”

Musk attempted to fight back, but his response was tepid at best.

But Griffin had the perfect retort.

Musk later tweeted that Griffin could have her account back, but she’d have to pay $8 a month. It remains to be seen if anyone on the face of the planet will go along Musk’s attempt to extort money from Twitter users.

Stephen King Responds To Musk’s Plan For Charging Twitter Users And It’s Absolutely Brutal

Even though he’s only owned Twitter for a couple of months now, Elon Musk is already losing money hand over fist on the social media site, with Bloomberg reporting that Musk’s net worth is down a cool $8 billion in the week since he paid $44 billion to purchase a controlling interest.

How to solve the massive hemorrhaging of cash from Twitter? Well, Musk floated the idea of charging $20 a month for those who want “verified” accounts, which are easily identified by the blue check mark you see next to some users, for example on MSNBC’s Twitter account:

The Washington Post reports that Musk is desperate to find ways for his new acquisition to pay for itself.

Musk is scrambling to find ways to shore up Twitter’s business and increase its revenue. Though the company is no longer public, it now has to make huge interest payments every year on the debt Musk accrued by buying it. Musk also pitched his co-investors on the deal by saying he would be able to improve the company’s business rapidly in the years after taking it over.

Right now, Twitter makes most of its money from advertising, and Musk is currently in New York meeting with advertisers to shore up relationships with them, including representatives of the biggest marketing agencies, according to an executive at one of those agencies who spoke on the condition of anonymity. But advertising won’t be enough, Musk has said repeatedly.

But the idea of charging users for verified accounts isn’t sitting well with many, including novelist Stephen King, who was eager to let Musk know that his plan is only going lead to millions dropping Twitter altogether, which could prove catastrophic for Musk’s dreams of making a mint off the site.

King let Musk have it.

Musk tried to counter with a better offer.

Others joined King and noted that since they’re providing the content for Twitter, maybe Musk should be sending them a check every month instead of the other way around.

Even an online poll shows that the vast majority of Twitter users will refuse to fork over a red cent for the right to post on the platform.

Sounds like Elon should have stuck to inheriting money from his daddy and being an insufferable asshole. At least he’s good at those.

Elon Musk Mocks Trump’s Truth Social And Suggests New Name For The Site

Even though he claims he’s actually going to purchase Twitter this time, Elon Musk still doesn’t control the social media site, and is lashing out at a potential competitor.

Speaking with the Financial Times, Musk had this to say about Truth Social (a.k.a. Twitter for losers), which failed, one-term former president Donald Trump now uses since he was banned from Facebook and Twitter for spreading lies about the 2020 election, which he lost in a landslide to President Joe Biden.

“[Truth Social] is essentially a rightwing echo chamber. It might as well be called Trumpet.”

So why is Musk suddenly interested in controlling Twitter, a deal he abandoned just months ago?

“I’m not doing Twitter for the money. It’s not like I’m trying to buy some yacht and I can’t afford it. I don’t own any boats. But I think it’s important that people have a maximally trusted and inclusive means of exchanging ideas and that it should be as trusted and transparent as possible.”

Musk’s interview with the Financial Times was wide-ranging and included the topic of his children, some of whom have publicly disowned him.

He also expressed his concern the American left has taken over academia and is warping the minds of young people. While he very briefly discussed his transgender daughter, Musk blamed “communism.”

“It’s full-on communism… and a general sentiment that if you’re rich, you’re evil,” He said. “[The relationship with her] may change, but I have very good relationships with all the others. Can’t win them all.”

The American left is evil, and yet Musk is still so ill-informed and brainwashed that he thinks anyone who disagrees with him is a communist. That’s classic right-wing propaganda, and it proves what an intellectually lazy person Elon Musk is and apparently always will be.

As for Truth Social, recent reports suggest it won’t be around much longer because it’s hemorrhaging money and losing investors.

Donald, Elon, And Kanye Get New Nicknames When A Tweet Comes Back To Bite Them

The Twitter account for the House Judiciary Republicans (which is controlled by Ohio Republican Jim Jordan), sent out a bizarre tweet Thursday evening that has set off a wave of online mockery.

Here’s the tweet:

Rapper Kanye West, Tesla founder Elon Musk, and Donald Trump. What do these three have in common? Well, they’re all insufferable assholes. They also lie more often than they tell the truth. Oh, and they’re all big fans of the failed, one-term, twice-impeached former president.

Carlson has been in the news this week for his meeting with West, which CNN notes turned out to be surreal at times.

Kanye West has explained his thinking behind his decision to dress himself and several Black models in “White Lives Matter” shirts earlier this week.

West, who legally changed his name to “Ye,” told Fox News host Tucker Carlson that he wore it because “it’s the obvious thing.”

“The answer to why I wrote ‘White Lives Matter’ on a shirt is because they do,” West said during the interview that aired Thursday.

Reaction to Jordan’s tweet wasn’t what he had expected.
