As failed one-term, twice-impeached former president Donald Trump draws closer to securing the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, he’s begun hinting that he’s already decided who will be his running mate, though he has yet to make a formal announcement regarding who might be the next vice president if the team should win the general election.
But according to Rich Lowry, editor-in-chief of the conservative National Review, the person Trump should choose is Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who served as press secretary in the Trump administration.
In an op-ed he penned for the National Review, Lowry writes that his short list for Trump’s running mate is Sanders, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, ex-Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC), and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH).
Why does Lowry list Sanders as the top pick? He explains:
The Arkansas governor served Trump ably as White House press secretary and is a MAGA figure in good standing. She is young, winsome and a talented communicator. As a mother of three who beat cancer, she has plenty of charming, moving personal stories and she’s good at telling them. She might indeed help soften the Trump ticket for suburban women.
Winsome, it should be noted, is defined as “attractive or appealing in appearance or character,” which is certainly a word that has likely never been applied to Sanders, who more often looks like a gargoyle or a trashy cowgirl who had her clothes picked out by a legally blind assistant.
However, Lowry admits that Sanders does have some drawbacks.
The question is, as the 41-year-old governor of a small state who has been in office only two years, how she’d handle the pressure of the national stage and whether people would see her as ready to be president.
No, Sanders most certainly isn’t ready to be a heartbeat away from the Oval Office. She’s an intellectual lightweight, a far right Christian extremist, and an apologist for what’s worst about today’s Republican Party: Their eager hatred for anyone who isn’t a white Anglo-Saxon protestant. Oh, and her father, Mike Huckabee, is a lying, fake Christian grifter who will peddle any snake oil cure that comes down the pike for a buck.
Sarah Sanders as vice president? Hell, Trump might just as well give David Duke a call. At least that way we’d know exactly what he means when he says he wants to make America great (translation: white) again.
