Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum couldn’t resist responding to Donald Trump’s latest plan to rename parts of the globe to fit his own narrative. Her comments quickly went viral, drawing rave reviews on social media.
Earlier this week, Trump suggested that the Gulf of Mexico should be changed to the “Gulf of America,” remarking, “We’re going to change because we do most of the work there and it’s ours. It’s appropriate, and Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”
It remains unclear if Trump can actually rename the Gulf of Mexico, but one of his most devoted congressional disciples, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), immediately introduced legislation in the House to do exactly that, noting, “Congress has to do this. You better bet we are absolutely going to change the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Let’s go!”
In response, President Sheinbaum told reporters that the United States should now be called “Mexican America.”
“It would be pretty, no?” she asked, using an old map that showed formerly Mexican-controlled areas of the current-day U.S. ― and its name “Mexican America” ― to drive her point home.
A video of Sheinbaum’s remarks was also shared on Twitter/X and has racked up 2.2 million views in 24 hours.
It’ll be interesting to see if Donald dares to respond to the Mexican leader. Even if he does, she’s already made it clear that he’s no match for her.
