When President Joe Biden spoke at the Gridiron Club and Foundation Dinner on Saturday, he noted that both the Democratic and Republican candidates for the presidency had already clinched their nominations.
The problem, Biden continued, is that one of the nominees is just too old, too feeble, and mentally unfit for the job of president.
According to the Associated Press, Biden then quipped, “The other’s me.”
It was a hilarious reversal of the narrative that’s been running since it became clear the Biden would once again face Donald Trump in a repeat of the 2020 election that Biden won.
Biden got some other jabs in at Trump, too.
Having got his punch lines out, Biden then turned to more serious matters, explaining that democracy itself is very much on the ballot.
The president also noted the importance of a free press in democratic nations.
Meanwhile, in Dayton, Ohio, Trump was warning of a “bloodbath” if he loses come November. The meaning was clear, despite campaign aides insisting that the disgraced ex-president was referring to the U.S. auto industry and not calling for violence.
Of course, when you consider that Trump helped incite the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, it’s no exaggeration to suggest that he’d welcome such an event once again if and when he does lose to Biden.
