Florida is a damn mess these days. It’s the COVID hotspot from hell, and its know-nothing, murderous governor, Ron DeSantis (R) seems to relish the fact that thousands of people are dying each day in the Sunshine State while he insists that no one needs to wear a protective mask (including children, who can’t safely be vaccinated for the deadly coronavirus) because he wants to see them smile. But it’s hard to smile when you’re hooked to a ventilator in the ICU.
The other, underreported Florida tragedy is the red tide that’s plaguing the state, most notably in Sarasota and Manatee County:
“The highest concentrations were found off Anna Maria Island in Manatee County; and in Sarasota County at Buttonwood Bayou, Siesta Key, Turtle Beach and North Jetty Park.
“Fish kills suspected to be related to red tide were reported in Hernando, Pasco, Pinellas, Manatee and Sarasota counties over the past week.
“Respiratory irritation was reported in Pinellas, Manatee and Sarasota counties.”
What can we do with Florida? We can’t disown it, as tempting as that might be right now.
Instead, the state needs help. You could even say it needs to be saved from itself. But how do we go about that?
