Virginia Republican Says Conservatives Own Christianity, And How Dare Obama Quote The Bible

Did you know that conservatives have exclusive rights on the Christian religion? Yep, according to Virginia Tea Party idiot Congressman David Brat, those on the right own Christianity, and he’s mighty upset that a progressive like President Obama dares to quote the Bible.

You may recall that in November, when the issue of Syrian refugees was a hot topic, the President commented:

“Scripture tells us that we shall not oppress a stranger, for we know the heart of a stranger –- we were strangers once, too.

“My fellow Americans, we are and always will be a nation of immigrants. We were strangers once, too. And whether our forebears were strangers who crossed the Atlantic, or the Pacific, or the Rio Grande, we are here only because this country welcomed them in, and taught them that to be an American is about something more than what we look like, or what our last names are, or how we worship.”

If you wonder where the President got that from, you can turn to Deuteronomy 10:19 and read:

“And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.”

Or perhaps some on the far right would prefer if there was more Biblical proof for what the President said. There is, and it resides at Leviticus 19:34:

“The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.”

And the verse President Obama was directly making reference to is this one: Exodus 23:9:

“Do not oppress a foreigner; you yourselves know how it feels to be foreigners, because you were foreigners in Egypt.”

But Congressman Brat begs to differ. Speaking to Sandy Rios on the American Family Radio Network, Brat said the right wingers own Christianity, and how dare the President use the Bible to point out conservative hypocrisy:

“Our side, the conservative side, needs to reeducate its people that we own the entire tradition. If you lose the moral argument, you lose the policy argument every time, so we need to reclaim the moral argument, where we’re so strong.”

Then Brat hinted at something more nefarious in the real reason the President had quoted the Bible: To consolidate federal power:

“He’s using the Christian tradition and trying to bring about compassion by bonking Republicans over the head with the Bible. It’s almost a comedy routine on what compassion and love is. He’s mocking his enemies in order to compel a larger federal state using the tradition of love.”

I have some news for Congressman Brat: If Jesus were walking the earth right now, he wouldn’t choose to cast his political lot with conservatives. There’s far too much hatred and far too little love on that side of the aisle.
