Failed, one-term former President Donald Trump is reportedly considering supplanting Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House of Representatives if Republicans retake control of the House in the 2022 midterm elections.
The Washington Post reports that Trump is assessing how he can best get back into the political fray of Washington and doesn’t want to wait until to run for the White House again in 2024:
“One adviser said some have urged Trump to withhold his support for McCarthy to be the next speaker of the House if Republicans retake the chamber in 2022, and the former president has appeared intrigued by the idea.
“‘Why not focus on the biggest, brightest brass ring in politics and the Republican Party between now and 2024, which is who should be speaker when, with Donald Trump’s help, Republicans take the House?’ the advisor said.”
However, not everyone in Trump’s inner circle thinks the idea of being Speaker is a good idea:
“Others close to both Trump and McCarthy, however, said they believe Trump will ultimately have little choice but to support McCarthy for speaker should Republicans regain the House.”
In case you’re wondering, there is no requirement that the House Speaker be a member of Congress, so Trump wouldn’t have to face voters and seek to win a seat in the House. He would just need the votes of a majority of the GOP caucus to be named as Speaker of the chamber.
The most telling part of this report, however, is that it should be clear to every Republican who still possesses a scintilla of gray matter that Donald Trump will stab any of them in the back to get what he wants. They’re all expendable to him, and he has no loyalty to anyone but himself.
Way to go, GOP! You just proved your own impotence when it comes to opposing a man who doesn’t give a damn about any of you. Not exactly a profile in courage.
