Donald Trump is absolutely livid that former President Jimmy Carter dared to die so close to Donnie’s upcoming inauguration on Jan. 20, and now he’s dishonoring Carter as the nation pays tribute to him.
Trump vented his childish rage on social media, writing:
“The Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at ‘half mast’ during my Inauguration. They think it’s so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our Country, they only think about themselves. Look at what they’ve done to our once GREAT America over the past four years – It’s a total mess!”
“In any event, because of the death of President Jimmy Carter, the Flag may, for the first time ever during an Inauguration of a future President, be at half mast,” he continued. “Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Some in the MAGA community have even suggested that Carter deliberately died when he did to interfere with Trump’s inauguration and that the incoming president should demand that flags be raised before Jan. 20.
However, there’s one problem with that plan: Until Trump takes the oath of office, he cannot issue any official orders that federal officials will obey. Only President Biden has that power.
Also, the official U.S. code for how long to lower the flag for the death of an ex-president is unambiguous:
“The President or a former President: for thirty days from the day of death. The flag shall also be flown at half-staff for such period at all United States embassies, legations, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.”
Trump’s childish online meltdown over flag protocol drew plenty of social media criticism.
