Gun Nuts

WTF?! Michigan Court: Gun Nuts Can Open Carry In Elementary Schools

Michigan Circuit Judge Archie Hayman has ruled that citizens in the state can now openly carry weapons in schools, including elementary schools.

Yes, that’s right: It is now perfectly legal for any gun-toting nutjob who has a gun permit to carry a gun while in the presence of little children. Because hey, what could possibly go wrong?

This case began when Kenneth Herman filed suit asking for the right to carry a handgun in his daughter’s school in the town of Clio. administrators at the school and other parents were opposed to Herman doing his Rambo impersonation around their children, so Herman decided to take it to court.

Shortly after Judge Hayman issued his ruling, Herman told alocal media outlet:

‘The ruling today does not come as a surprise, the law is the law. Now that Clio Area Schools have heard the ruling, read the laws and the Court of Appeals case law has been explained to them, I [sic] they stop burning through tax dollars fighting the law and common sense.”

Yeah, because common sense certainly tells us that guns and children are a wonderful combination.

Democrats in Michigan have been trying to tighten up the state’s insane “open carry everywhere” law, but have so far been unsuccessful. Rep. Andy Schor introduced a bill in 2013 that would have prevented individuals from taking guns into schools, but his bill was killed in committee at the specific urging of the NRA, thereby proving that the NRA will not be satisfied until gun extremists are allowed to carry their weapons of mass destruction anytime and anywhere they want.

But consider the potential consequences of people with guns in schools: What if an adult leaves his or her gun in the bathroom and a child finds it? What if two open carry wackos decide they don’t like the way their children are being treated? Do they then attempt to rectify the situation by holding a teacher at gunpoint?

As a parent, I can tell you this without any reservation: The day guns can be openly carried in the school my daughter attends, I will take her out of that school. And should they be allowed in every public school in this state, I will either enroll her in private school or home school her.

Georgia Gun Nut Walks Around Atlanta Airport With Loaded AR-15–Says He’s Being Harassed

The last time you were at the airport, did you notice anyone other than security officials carrying a loaded gun? Well, if you want to see such a thing, I’d advise you to drop by Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta, where a man did exactly that yesterday.

Jim Cooley was at the airport to drop his daughter off for a flight, and he thought he’s also strap on his AR-15 semiautomatic rifle–replete with a 100-round drum–and exercise his right to open carry under Georgia law. Why did he need such a weapon? Let’s allow Cooley to explain:

“It shouldn’t matter what I carry, just that I choose to carry. You never know where something might happen.”

You mean something like an open-carry nutbag with a weapon of mass destruction prowling the halls of the airport?

As it turns out, what Cooley did was perfectly legal. He even quoted the law and the restrictions for airports as if he were an attorney:

“You can carry in unsecured areas of the airport. Past TSA, never.”

As you might expect, a man with a loaded AR-15 drew more than a little attention from security personnel at the airport. Cooley was approached by a fire marshall and a police officer, both of whom asked him questions. He was also followed to his car by several officers who took photos of him. And Cooley says that makes him feel kinda harassed, kinda like a victim in this whole situation. Cooley, in typical gun nut fashion, rationalized his behavior by saying:

“If you don’t exercise your rights, the government doesn’t have any hesitation taking them away.”

Personally, I think someone should take Mr. Cooley away and have a long talk with him about why it’s a really bad idea to tote guns in airports.

Open Carry Activist Causes Lockdown At School, Then Taunts Police

An open carry activist in Madison, Michigan, caused a high school to be placed on lockdown last week, and then began taunting police officers who were called by parents who saw the man marching in front of the school while carrying a loaded shotgun.

The incident occurred last Thursday morning when a man carrying a shotgun and video camera began walking in front of Lamphere High School. As you might expect, police officials said they “received about a million 911 calls” from concerned residents in the neighborhood. The high school was then placed on lockdown for nearly an hour, until police,

“…determined the man was exercising his right to open carry and was not a threat.”

So a man near a school with a shotgun isn’t a threat? Excuse me if I beg to differ, but I happen to be a parent! If a guy is brandishing a gun outside the school my daughter attends, he is most definitely a threat!

The story, however, merely begins with the open carry lugnut and his “right” to have a loaded gun outside a school. The man, who as yet is unidentified—he goes by the YouTube handle Nunya Beeswax—then copped an attitude when the police began to ask him a few questions. An officer is heard asking the man how long he planned to be out in front of the school, to which he replied:

“Oh, the funny thing about you’re asking me a question is, I’m not going to answer it […] Anything I say can be held against me in a court of law, right?”

At this point, the officer tells Mr. Beeswax he has no plans to arrest him, and this only makes him angrier:

“Are you going to shoot me? […] That badge on my chest gives him no more rights than I have. You work for me and the tax payers, right?”

No, the officer says, he merely wants to have a conversation with Beeswax. Beeswax then took his lunacy to the next level, saying:

“No, I’m trying to talk to you, tough guy […] We all know y’all are chompin’ at the bit to put something on me.”

The officers got back into their cars and left Beeswax alone with his shotgun, his camera, and the voices in his head telling him to cause a scene and make a total asshat of himself.

Even other open carry advocates were offended by the actions of Beeswax. A pro-gun blog entitled “Bearing Arms”posted this message:

“Law enforcement officers were diverted, and school was disrupted, because this ‘gentleman’ insisted on open carrying past a high school, seemingly with the express intent of getting a rise out of authorities and making a public spectacle out of himself.”

I respect the right of Americans to legally possess guns for their personal protection. But the day you start doing so outside a school my child attends, I am going to call you on that action. As the old saying goes: Your rights end where my rights begin.
