Proving that being a Republican requires you to abstain from logic and reason while completely shutting down your brain, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) sounded like a raving lunatic Sunday during an appearance on Fox News.
Instead, Blackburn began ranting about controlling kids and closing churches, neither of which has anything to do with the president’s legislative proposals:
Socialism? Rebuilding crumbling roads and bridges is socialism? If so, then the vast majority of Americans must be socialists, because polls show they support the president’s plan.
But Blackburn was just getting warmed up. She then decided she’d double down on her message of fear and loathing to add:
WTF?! How does infrastructure and investing in people have anything do with going to church?
As for the mention of banking and transactions, Blackburn’s conspiracy theory has already been debunked, with USA Today noting:
“Biden’s Treasury Dept. Declares IRS Will Monitor Transactions of ALL U.S. Accounts Over $600,” reads the headline of a Sept. 10 InfoWars story that has been shared widely on Facebook.
The same claim popped up in various iterations on social media, like a Sept. 22 Instagram post claiming Biden’s proposal would give the IRS “direct access to your bank transactions.” It accumulated several thousand likes within the first day.
We rate the claim that the Treasury Department ‘declares’ the IRS will monitor transactions in all U.S. bank accounts over $600 as PARTLY FALSE, based on our research. The Biden Administration has proposed monitoring accounts over $600, but the only figures reported to the government would be the total inflows and outflows for the year – not the size and nature of each transaction. And the Treasury can’t simply “declare” this measure, it must be approved by Congress.
Under the Patriot Act, which was passed after the Sept. 11 attacks, the government already has a certain amount of oversight of financial transactions. You cannot open an account with valid ID and any suspicious activity in an account is immediately reported to Homeland Security and the Treasury Department.
Marsha Blackburn — like nearly every Republican — has no solution to any of the problems this country faces. They only have fear, lies, conspiracy theories, and gibberish. It’s no wonder voters gave control of Congress and the White House in last year’s election.
