According to Stephen Miller, who served as a senior adviser to disgraced, one-term, twice-impeached former president Donald Trump, the reason Republicans did so poorly in the 2022 midterm election has nothing to do with Trump and everything to do with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
Appearing on “Sunday Morning Futures,” Miller told host Maria Bartiromo that he blamed mail-in voting and a lack of proper funding from the GOP for the lackluster performance of many Republican candidates.
“The financial disparity between the Democrats and Republicans is still enormous, particularly at the top of the ticket.”
And then Miller turned his fire on McConnell.
“We have to note the extraordinarily fateful decision on the part of the senate leadership fund and Mitch McConnell to take the money that should have been spent in Arizona to get Blake up on TV early on, and instead give it to Lisa Murkowski for a Republican battle against the Republican-backed nominee in Alaska.”
McConnell didn’t waste resources on Masters because he knew he was a deeply flawed candidate who was going to lose no matter how much money was pumped into the Arizona Senate race.
Miller also claimed that Republicans had failed to attract independent voters because the party didn’t focus on wedge issues, pointing to abortion.
“Democrats don’t need it to be a majority issue, they just need it to be an issue that they can target and activate the right voters with, with overwhelming enthusiasm.”
Oh, and McConnell isn’t exciting, according to Miller.
“So you’re going to lose these close races because the Republican brand, set by Mitch McConnell on down, is not exciting, is not persuasive, is not convincing to voters.”
Miller — much like Trump and others on the right — simply cannot admit that the majority of voters are in the center and see the GOP as a threat to basic freedoms and American democracy. They’re also sick and tired of Donald Trump and want to see him indicted and put on trial.
