Donald Trump Elections U.S. Senate

Republicans Fear Lindsey Graham’s ‘Hail Mary’ Plan To Get Trump Reelected Will Doom Them Both

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) thinks he may have a brilliant way of helping Donald Trump get reelected, but most members of the GOP don’t share his enthusiasm for the harebrained plan he’s cooked up to help save the bacon of the incumbent president.

Egged on by Trump, Graham has decided that he’s going to call former Special Counsel Robert Mueller to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee (which Graham serves as chairman of) sometime in September or October, with the hopes of laying out some elaborate “deep state” conspiracy to spy on and short-circuit the 2016 Trump campaign for the White House, which Trump just so happened to win with help from Russian troll farms and online bots conveniently located in Moscow.

According to The Daily Beast, Graham insists he had long been hesitant to call Mueller:

“I was reluctant to call him, because it was hard to watch [him testify] in the House. I just think, if he decided to comment on the (Roger) Stone case… OK, let’s hear what you’ve got to say.”

But as Sir Isaac Newton told us centuries ago, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, and it’s that very possibility that could come back to bite Graham and his buddy in the Oval Office right on their asses.

Even fellow conservatives who support Trump are scratching their heads and wondering if perhaps Graham has thought through the possibilities of an open hearing with Mueller blowing up in the faces of Republicans.

Take John Dowd for one. Dowd was the lead attorney for the president during part of the Russia investigation, and he cannot for the life of him understand what Graham stands to gain from such an exercise:

“I read in the paper that the Democrats want to hear from Mueller [again, too]. I thought Graham was a Republican! I don’t understand what the guy’s doing! So what if the Democrats want [Mueller]. He’s the Republican chairman of the judiciary committee. [Why do it just] because the Democrats want it?”

Fox News host Tucker Carlson also thinks more hearings on Russiagate are pointless:

“Who cares how many Benghazi hearings we have? We are supposed to care, but why should we? How did Peter Strzok’s text messages become more important than saving American jobs from foreign nationals who are taking them? It is lunacy! We fall for it every time.”

And then there are political observers who say Graham should focus on his own backyard — the Senate race he’s running against hard-charging Democrat Jaime Harrison — and stop trying to get cheap headlines.

But as of now, Graham is moving ahead with the tacit approval of the White House, which is looking for something — anything! — that can stop the bleeding they see in the polls when Trump is pitted against Joe Biden.

By the time the smoke clears later this year, Graham may wish he had never heard the name Robert Mueller.
