Rachel Maddow Explains How Some GOP Senators Are Trying To Shut Down The Russia Probe

Could it be that even as the House and Senate continue with their investigations of possible connections between President Trump and the Russians during the 2016 election that some Republican senators are working behind the scenes to sabotage the Russia probe?

On her show Wednesday evening, Rachel Maddow laid out the case that some members of the Senate Judiciary Committee investigating potential obstruction of justice by the president appear to also be attempting to derail the probe, commenting:

“We’re now seeing Republicans on that committee kind of go after the investigation itself in a way that hasn’t really been picked up on, in a way that hasn’t been widely reported today. It’s happening in plain sight.”

Specifically, Republicans are now asking for documents the FBI requested warrants for. Those documents–many of them involving financial dealings between Trump, his associates, and Russian entities–are key to the ongoing work of both the FBI and Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Maddow explained the significance of this move:

“These Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee are now asking about why you started that investigation, what you have, what you submitted to the court, how you got your warrants. What they appear to be up to is trying to discredit the FBI for having started this investigation at all. What they are implying is that the whole FBI investigation all stemmed from that dossier of allegations against Trump and his campaign that was published in Buzzfeed in January, the Christopher Steele dossier. They’re saying implicitly that the dossier of materials is unproven and suspect and that that’s what the FBI’s whole investigation is based on, and therefore, it’s nonsense.”

What does that mean? It means, Maddow concluded, that Senate Republicans are “trying to stop this thing in its tracks before it comes to its conclusion.”

If this proves to be true, it would suggest that some Congressional Republicans are also complicit and part of a larger conspiracy to shield the president. That’s also a crime.
