The militant pro-Trump crowds who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday were planning more than just a tour of the building or a mere protest. They were also planning to find Vice President Mike Pence (who was in the building at the time for the certification of electoral votes making Joe Biden the next president), and execute him if he refused to help overturn the results of the 2020 election.
In some of the photos of the protesters, flex cuffs can clearly be seen. Those are used by law enforcement to restrain suspects, especially during mass arrests, when using handcuffs is impractical. A gallows had also been set up with a noose, and reportedly it was intended for much more than just show:
Reuters photographer Jim Bourg said he heard talk of executing Pence if he could been found by the rioters:
Trump also referenced Pence when he spoke to his supporters on Wednesday, telling them:
A supporter who was at the rally told a local news station that the crowd turned violent after learning Pence would not participate in the electoral coup:
“People got news on their phone that Mike Pence said he is not going to object to these seven states, and he was going to accept the electoral college that promotes [President-elect Joe] Biden. That is when everybody got really upset and that’s when they started storming.”
This video also features rioters chanting for Pence to be hanged:
Yet despite this, there are reports that Pence remains opposed to triggering the 25th Amendment and removing his boss from office as a threat to the national security of the United States.
Loyalty is a good thing, in moderation. But being a delusional member of a cult, historical evidence proves, leads to death and destruction. Too bad Mike Pence can’t find the guts to extricate himself from the Trump cult and rid the country of the single biggest threat to the United States.
