Perhaps you’re familiar with the old expression that when it comes to most crimes, all you have to do is follow the money.
That’s especially true as it applies to Donald Trump and the Trump Organization because the failed, one-term former president never does anything unless there’s money in it for him and his company.
ABC News reports that Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. subpoenaed Jeff McConney, controller of the Trump Organization:
“McConney, who serves as a senior vice president and controller for the Trump Organization, is the first employee of the former president’s company called to testify, the sources said, and his testimony is a sign that prosecutors have burrowed deep into the company’s finances.”
Finances are thought to be key when it comes to the investigation being conducted by Vance and his prosecutors, and Daniel R. Alonso, the former chief assistant district attorney in Manhattan said it makes perfect sense that McConney would appear before the grand jury:
“Complex accounting issues are crucial to this investigation, as is the knowledge and intent of the people at the Trump Organization involved in these transactions.
“In any case like that, the two most important people — whether as targets or witnesses — are the company’s CFO and the company’s controller.”
The Trump Organization — which is owned by the former president and three eldest children — is suspected of having committed bank and tax fraud along with possibly laundering money through the company.
Vance is also looking at the Trump Organization’s Chief Financial Officer, Allen Weisselberg, and trying to flip Weisselberg to tell what he knows regarding any possible crimes committed by Trump and other officials inside the former president’s company, so it would make sense to also talk with McConney, Alonso noted:
“If, as has been reported, the DA is targeting Allen Weisselberg, it’s a logical step to seek testimony from the controller, who presumably reports to him and works with him every day.”
Follow the money and find the crimes. That’s even truer when you’re dealing with grifter like Donald Trump.
