Thursday morning on MSNBC, a panel appearing on Morning Joe suggested that former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn may have been behind reports suggesting that Trump transition team officials knew he was on the payroll of foreign nations yet still appointed him.
But while all of this would seem to be bad news for the embattled Trump, several panelists noted that it’s also devastating to the reputation of Mike Pence. Host Joe Scarborough noted that Pence, as head of the transition team, should have known Flynn was working as a foreign agent and put a stop to his appointment. And Karen Tumulty of the Washington Post added that Pence had been in the Oval Office shortly before Trump allegedly asked former FBI Director James Comey to drop the investigation into Flynn.
Bloomberg Politics editor John Heilemann then began to sketch out the lines which show Flynn might be in the process of putting the knife deeper into Pence:
“This is a bad story for Pence, either way. Either he knew and is lying or he did not know and was wildly incompetent. Either way, not a great story for him. By the way, it seems to me the import of this story is that Michael Flynn’s lawyer came out a couple of months ago and said that Mike Flynn had a story to tell — he’s now starting to tell that story.”
Might Flynn and his attorney now be leaking these stories in the hope of getting immunity? Heilemann suggested that could be the case:
“If this is the thing that he’s leaking, and there are other things that he’s still holding to offer in exchange for immunity, that means this isn’t even the worst of it — that means he’s got more things to say.”
Why did Trump and Pence insist on appointing Flynn despite the warnings regarding who he had accepted money from? Scarborough addressed that question by noting:
“I can tell you first-hand, everybody on that transition team spoke of Michael Flynn as if he were Dwight Eisenhower on June 6, 1944. He was the greatest guy, he was a calming influence — that was the one selection that Donald Trump and Jared Kushner would never be moved off of.”
Now Mike Pence and Donald Trump are learning the true meaning of the old adage, You lie down with dogs, you wake up with fleas.
