There was a time not so long ago when Fox News was the king of the hill when it came to cable ratings. They regularly beat both CNN and MSNBC on a weekly basis and drew the largest audiences for their primetime shows.
Now, however, MSNBC has ascended to the top of the heap as Fox has lost 30 percent of its total audience, according to AdWeek:
“MSNBC ranked No. 1 on all of cable in average total viewers across the 24-hour daypart, averaging just under 1.4 million total viewers in 6 a.m.-6 a.m.
“MSNBC’s performance relative to Q1 2020 is positive. The network grew +16% in total prime time viewers, +7% in the prime time demo, +25% in total day viewers and +20% in the total day demo. The network has the aforementioned news events to thank for that growth.”
Of particular interest to those of us who religiously tune to MSNBC every evening at 9 p.m. EST, “The Rachel Maddow Show” absolutely dominated all other programs on cable news, closing out the quarter in the #1 spot for the first time in over two years, proving that most Americans who watch news in the evening want facts instead of fiction and a brilliant anchor to lead them through the headlines of the day.
Could Fox News be on its last leg? Considering that the market for right-wing news continues to get crowded, with Newsmax and One America News Network (OANN) siphoning off older, white male viewers (which was once Fox’s mainstay), it does indeed seem like Fox may be on borrowed time. What remains to be seen is how Fox chairman Rupert Murdoch will attempt to save what remains of his so-called “news” network.
Today is a day to celebrate, if only because facts are winning out over propaganda.
