Congress Elections GOP

Kevin McCarthy Humiliates Himself With A Dr. Oz-Style Grocery Store Campaign Ad

We’ve all heard the old saying: Some people never learn.

One of those people is House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who thought it’d be a great idea to shoot a campaign ad for the Republican Party’s “Commitment to America,” a warmed-over rehash of the 1994 GOP “Contract With America” that led to a government shutdown and helped get then-president Bill Clinton re-elected in 1996.

But McCarthy also decided he’d shoot the ad in a grocery store, despite Pennsylvania Republican senatorial candidate Mehmet Oz’s disaster when he filmed an ad featuring cruditΓ©s (a.k.a. chopped veggies). Remember that head-shaking ad? If not, take a look, along with commentary from the Lincoln Project:

And now along comes McCarthy, Newsweek reports, and his ad is almost as bad as Oz’s:

It highlights less foreign dependence on energy to prevent increased gas prices at home, and discourages the continued reliance on China for medical and technological supplies. The platform also aims to “protect the lives of unborn children and their mothers.”

“Now, more than ever, Americans are struggling just to get by. They’re wondering if they can even make it. You know what’s worse? The country’s struggle goes beyond just the grocery store.”

And that’s when the ad gets downright dark:

He alludes to record-high violent crime, and the “national security crisis” at the U.S.-Mexico border that includes elevated fentanyl-related deaths. He and GOP leadership, which includes Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and representatives Elise Stefanik of New York and Gary Palmer of Alabama, also blame liberals for school closures and lockdowns that have led to worse educational outcomes.

“The White House and the Democrat majority in Congress control Washington,” McCarthy said. “They’re in charge; this is their record. And yet, they want you to give them two more years of power.”

As you might expect, McCarthy neglected to mention that the GOP has some terrifying plans for this country if they take control of the House, as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) noted on Thursday:

“House Republicans are doubling down on an extreme MAGA agenda: to criminalize women’s health care, to slash seniors’ Medicare (including with the repeal of the lower drug prices for seniors in the Inflation Reduction Act), and to attack our democracy.”

Those remarks were echoed by Massachusetts Representative Katherine Clark, another member of House Democratic leadership, who warned voters:

“House Republicans are making a ‘commitment’ to ban abortion nationwide and criminalize women’s health. We’re committed to stopping them.

“MAGA Republicans released a blueprint for extremism. Their vision is a future where women’s health care is criminalized, prescription drug costs skyrocket, and Social Security and Medicare are slashed. Republicans are a threat to every American’s freedom and security.”

Oh, and if McCarthy’s new ad isn’t bad enough, it also appears from recent polling that Democrats may well keep control of the House and add seats in the Senate because the GOP was stupid enough to choose Trump-endorsed candidates.
