Huckster And Hypocrite: Ted Cruz Voted Against Sandy Relief, Now Demands It For Texas

What bothers me most about Ted Cruz is probably the fact that he tries to pretend he’s a small government conservative, but then when it comes to Texas, he cannot wait to get his wheelbarrow and load up on pork. In other words, he’s a Texas-sized hypocrite who stands for nothing other than his own self-aggrandizement and self-promotion.

The latest example of his hypocrisy and blatant hucksterism can be seen in his reaction to viewing the devastation wrought by the massive flooding in Texas. Dozens of people are dead, thousands more have lost their homes and everything in them, and Cruz declared yesterday:

“There are a series of federal statutory thresholds that have to be satisfied. Initially, it appears those thresholds are likely to be satisfied by the magnitude of the damage we’re seeing. Democrats and Republicans in the congressional delegation will stand as one in support of the federal government meeting its statutory obligations to provide the relief to help the Texans who are hurting.”

Yet this is the very same penny-pinching dirtbag who, in 2012, when a relief bill was before the Senate for victims of Hurricane Sandy, had the nerve to stand in the well of that august body and say:

“This bill is symptomatic of a larger problem in Washington — an addiction to spending money we do not have. The United States Senate should not be in the business of exploiting victims of natural disasters to fund pork projects that further expand our debt.”

No pork for you folks up North, but when Texas is suffering, bring all the hogs you can find and let Lone Star state residents feed off the government.

I do not in any way, shape, or form begrudge the victims of the Texas floods all the federal relief money they may need to put their lives back together. Not for a moment. But I object to people like Ted Cruz preaching their version of economic theory and then reversing themselves when it serves their purposes or helps get them reelected.

Mark my words: When Cruz runs for reelection to the Senate 2018, he will have images of the flooding and taglines saying that he personally led the fight to secure relief funds for his constituents.

That kind of craven, hypocritical behavior is the very reason so many in this country think Washington is terminally broken and beyond repair.
