Seems like each day brings us yet another right wing wacko bird who is convinced that if the Supreme Court rules in favor of same-sex marriage, it will signal the end of the United States. But syndicated columnist Cal Thomas has done them all one better: He says it’s proof we’re on the verge of the apocalypse.
Keep in mind that Thomas is a supposedly “respected” columnist whose work appears in “USA Today” on a weekly basis. Thomas says he fully expects the Supreme Court to rule that same-sex marriage is Constitutional later this year and even handicapped the vote, saying:
“I think it’s going to go 5-4 or even 6-3 in favor of same-sex marriage. All of these things are not the cause of our decadence, they’re a reflection of it.”
That may be true Cal, but the fact you’re allowed to be as ignorant and intolerant as you are is a reflection of just how far extreme-right opponents of same-sex marriage have lurched. I wonder if Thomas has ever contemplated the notion, that our evolution on equal rights for all could also be seen as a positive step forward for the nation. Something tells me such an idea would never survive in the vacuum of a mind he possesses.
Thomas then tried to bolster his intolerant musings with a twisted interpretation of the Bible, by saying:
“If you read the Scriptures, as I do, in both testaments all of these things are forecast in prophesies, in the book of Daniel and what Jesus and Paul said, so I’m not worried about it.”
It also says in the Bible that in the “end times” many people will say they come in the name of Jesus and attempt to lead people astray. Hmm….could that be you, Cal?
In a final moronic flourish, Thomas said he felt assured by his understanding of Biblical prophecy:
“I say everything is right on schedule. I’m trying to shore up my own family first and, hopefully, that will be an example to other people… If you look at not only what Jesus said, but Paul the Apostle, about what things would be like in the end times, people will be lovers of lies rather than the truth. They will elevate things that are called abomination in scripture to normality… All of the prophesies up to the final ones have come true. And that’s why I say that everything is right on schedule.”
Yep, right on schedule. As are the parochial attitudes of the truly uninformed, like Cal Thomas. Seems like anytime we make progress in America, some small group of contrarians sees that progress as the end of the world.
