Just last week, Republicans were complaining that President Joe Biden hadn’t visited Maui to survey the damage from a massive wildfire that destroyed portions of the island and has so far claimed the lives of 115 people, with another 850 still missing.
On Monday, the president and First Lady Jill Biden were on the scene in Maui, but the GOP still wasn’t happy, deciding to attack the president for daring to pet a rescue dog.
According to HuffPost:
While meeting with first responders, Biden shook hands with the handler, petted the dog and noted that it was wearing boots to protect its paws.
“That’s some hot ground, man,” Biden said.
No sooner had video of the event hit the internet than a social media account for RNC Research lobbed a hateful post at the president.
Distracted? Not at all. The president was merely taking some time to show appreciation for and attention to the dog. Most normal people acknowledge a dog when they see one, probably because they’ve been “man’s best friend” since we domesticated them thousands of years ago.
The White House saw the hateful tweet and deputy press secretary Andrew Bates responded, “He’s petting one of the dogs that’s working hard searching for remains so survivors who’ve lost loved ones can have closure. This criticism is classless and stupid.”
And then others began barking back at RNC Research, with some reminding the GOP that at least Biden likes dogs, unlike Donald Trump who has never owned one.
