Consider this hypothetical situation: Joe Biden defeats Donald Trump and becomes the 46th President of the United States. The long national nightmare is finally over with and the U.S. returns to normality.
But what happens in 2024? Does Biden seek a second term, or would he decide one term is enough and pass the torch to VP Kamala Harris?
Whatever happens with the Democrats, a terrifying new twist has now entered the realm of possibility before we’ve even seen the results of this year’s race for the White House.
According to former White House strategist Steve Bannon, Trump will run again in 2024 if he loses to Biden. He told The Australian:
Bannon, who was recently arrested and charged with money laundering and fraud, also said he’s of the opinion that this year’s election is much closer than polls suggest and the Supreme Court or House of Representatives would decide who wins.
However, as with most things Bannon says and does, there’s one hell of a major flaw in his logic regarding Trump being on the ballot in 2024: The president’s many legal problems, which may well result in him being charged, indicted, and convicted on multiple counts of insurance fraud, bank fraud, tax fraud, and money laundering. It’s going to be more than a bit difficult for Trump to conduct a campaign when he’s sitting in a prison cell.
Bannon has delusions of grandeur, and he seems to think that Trump is some sort of Teflon-coated political messiah who cannot possibly be defeated by the will of the voters.
But the truth is much more pedestrian, because Trump is just a malignant asshole and con man who has lost favor with the vast majority of the American voting public. If and when he loses, he’ll skulk away and write a book in an attempt to reframe his own failure and blame his loss on others. That’s all that’ll be left for him.
