As the news surrounding Russian interference in the 2016 president election continues to cast a cloud over the Trump administration, a former CIA officer said Friday that the media is focused on the wrong subjects in the federal investigation and should start looking at senior officials in the White House.
Philip Mudd, appearing on the “Overtime” segment of Real Time With Bill Maher, was asked by the host:
“What do you think will come of the investigation into Trump campaign adviser Cater Page and his ties to Russia, and I might add Michael Flynn.”
“Look, the reason Carter Page is being featured is because he’s prominent in the press, not because he’s the most prominent target of the FBI. I think there will eventually be an indictment. Somebody going to be indicted, I don’t know if it’s going to be Carter Page — I think he’s chump change, I think it’s someone higher up.”
When Maher asked Mudd to elaborate, the former CIA agent told him:
“They’ve got to have a significant amount of intercepts, that is communications with the Russians that led them down this path. Then you are going to get people who are going to flip because you’re going to walk in and say, ‘Son, you either get a federal charge or you’re going to talk.’ That person is going to go home to their wife and kids and say ‘I don’t want three hots and a cot in the federal pen. I’ll talk.’”
Also on Friday, the Washington Post reported that former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was warned by members of the Trump transition team that his meetings with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak were likely being monitored by U.S. intelligence agencies and could prove detrimental to the entire Trump team. Transition officials were so concerned about Flynn’s contacts with Kislyak that Obama administration officials for a classified CIA profile of Kislyak.
This entire matter of Trump officials meeting with Russian government representatives and being assisted by Russian intelligence has conspiracy written all over it. And it could well wind up bringing down senior members of the administration, including Trump and Mike Pence.
