While he was visiting South Carolina today, failed one-term, twice-impeached, and four-time indicted former president Donald Trump purchased a handgun, according to a spokesperson for the loser ex-president.
If that’s true, Trump and whoever sold him the weapon broke federal firearms law and the disgraced former head of state also violated the conditions of his bail agreement.
While it’s not illegal to purchase a weapon via the so-called “gun show loophole,” Trump isn’t just your average buyer, as Brad Heath of Reuters reported. Why? Because Trump is under federal indictment.
18 U.S.C. § 922(d)(1) makes it a federal crime to sell a firearm to a person who is under felony indictment. And 18 U.S.C. § 922(n) makes it a federal crime for a person under indictment to ship or transport a firearm.
Under § 922(d)(1), it doesn’t matter whether it was a sale. It’s unlawful to sell “or otherwise dispose of” a firearm to a person you reasonably know is under felony indictment.
Trump is already facing sanctions and the possible imposition of a gag order by U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkin for threatening remarks he’s made in recent weeks.
Of course, it’s likely that Trump will deny he actually purchased the gun, if only because he lies about everything and doesn’t need more legal problems since he’s already been charged with 91 felony counts in multiple jurisdictions.
It should be interesting to see exactly what lie Trump and his press team have to say about the photo of him holding a gun considering that Hunter Biden has been indicted for a similar crime.
