Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) is resigning from Congress at the end of the year, according to multiple reports. He is also angling to be the head of former President Donald Trump’s new social media company.
CNN reports:
Republican Rep. Devin Nunes of California announced Monday he’ll leave the House in the coming weeks, in order to follow an undisclosed “new opportunity to fight for the most important issues I believe in.”
“I’m writing to let you know I’ve decided to pursue this opportunity, and therefore I will be leaving the House of Representatives at the end of 2021,” Nunes said in a letter to his constituents.
That was later confirmed by multiple news outlets:
In choosing not to remain in Congress, Nunes is achieving on his own terms what California Democrats could not in multiple well-funded attempts to unseat him. A Republican representing California’s agriculture-dominated Central Valley, Nunes has become a primary campaign target for Democrats given Nunes’ loyalty to Trump.
Nunes was indeed facing a tough reelection fight, with redistricting expected to cost him his seat in Congress:
An editor for The Cook Political Report, which tracks elections, wrote on Twitter that Nunes’ district would turn from having voted for former President Donald Trump in 2020 by five percentage points to one that backed President Joe Biden by nine.
