Reproductive RIghts in America

Anti-Choice Extremism–Alabama Seeks To Take Custody Of Fetus Away From Woman

The state of Alabama, apparently seeking to create the most draconian anti-choice atmosphere in the United States, is now on the verge of making women little more than mere vessels for the carrying of fetuses.

In a scene more reminiscent of Margaret Atwood’s classic dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale, Alabama will attempt to take custody of all unborn children, regardless of how the pregnant woman may feel about the matter.

Yes, Alabama is currently trying to strip a woman’s parental rights away from her even though she clearly stated she had no wish to be a parent. The woman, identified as Jane Doe in court documents, sought to terminate her pregnancy, but Alabama District Attorney Chris Connolly refused to allow her to exercise her rights. Instead, he callously charged her under chemical endangerment laws and an attorney was then appointed to represent the fetus.

An attorney is representing the fetus! An unborn child has an attorney. Just the latest chapter in the GOP’s War on Women, which they love to claim doesn’t exist.

The ACLU is representing Jane Doe, and it says she has expressed a “strong desire” to have an abortion.

Oh, but not until we see how the fetus feels about the matter. Get the fetus an attorney forthwith!

ACLU legal director Randall Marshall said Doe is currently in jail and the state maintains she has changed her mind about wanting to terminate her pregnancy:

“If this is truly her decision, it must be respected. However, the circumstances under which this affidavit was obtained are highly suspicious and we are in the process of trying to determine Ms. Doe’s true wishes.”

A federal judge is now involved in the matter and says he will meet with Ms. Doe in private to determine how she wants to proceed.

But this raises a much larger question: Are we prepared to see states impose this kind of burden on a woman who seeks to exercise her reproductive choice? Do we want to put women in jail and use taxpayer funds for attorneys who will represent the fetus in question?

Do we want to see our country treat women as nothing more than incubators? Are we ready to take that step into the arms of Big Brother?

Former President Jimmy Carter: The U.S. Is An ‘Oligarchy With Unlimited Political Bribery’

We are, in my opinion, so fortunate to have a man like Jimmy Carter to speak the truth and call it like he sees it. That’s one of the things I admire most about this great man and former President of the United States.

Once again the 39th President is speaking out on what he sees happening in America, especially as it relates to how money controls the political process.

Speaking on the nationally syndicated radio show the Thom Hartmann Program, President Carter was asked specifically about the Supreme Court saying in the Citizens United ruling that corporations have a First Amendment right of speech which allows them to donate obscene amounts of money to campaigns. Carter did not mince his words on the issue:

“It violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.”

Yes, he said exactly what so many have been saying for years now: the United States is now nothing more than an oligarchy, where a small group of people have control of the country. The Koch brothers, with their untold billions, have a much louder voice when it comes to what laws are passed in Washington than you or I do.

But President Carter didn’t stop there. He went on to say:

“And the same thing applies to governors and U.S. senators and congress members. So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over. … The incumbents, Democrats and Republicans, look upon this unlimited money as a great benefit to themselves. Somebody’s who’s already in Congress has a lot more to sell to an avid contributor than somebody who’s just a challenger.”

You’ve heard the expression, The best Congress money can buy? That’s exactly what we have today in the United States. It has to end, because if it doesn’t, no one will ever again believe in the political process, apathy will grow, and we will all wind up as nothing more than the cogs in a machine controlled by a few filthy rich men and women.

President Carter is trying to warn us. We would be wise to heed his warning.

The Karma Is Gonna Get Ya

Hackers Turn Pro-Confederate Online Group Into Celebration Of Obama, Islam, And Gay Rights

The creators of a pro-Confederate Facebook group got a painful lesson in online security from a New York-based writer who hacked their group and turned it into everything they hate most of all.

Virgil Texas proudly admits he joined the private “Confederate Pride” group and then proceeded to change its banner picture several times before convincing page administrators to allow him to change all of its settings to “clean out the trolls.”

But what Texas did next was simply the best example of turning the tables in recent memory: he changed the name of the group to “LGBT Southerners for Michelle Obama and Judaism.” Here are some of his posts on Twitter as he did so:

“I’ve settled on turning the group into LGBT Southerners for Michelle Obama and Judaism. wish me luck.”

“The Confederate Pride group is going in a new direction thanks to my visionary

Members of the group began leaving the group like rats fleeing a sinking ship with comments like these:

“I thought that this group was about showing and sharing our Southern pride and heritage, not a group supporting gay marriage and Michelle Obama, so I’ll be leaving.”

“I’M OUT.”

“Good bye!! Wtf is this shit??!!

Later in the day, the original group administrators finally managed to kick Virgil Texas out of their Confederate group, but the damage had been done. Not only that, but Texas had also granted administrative privileges to 50 other users who wanted to create some online mayhem, and the group took another turn: it became known as “Islam is the Light.”

You can imagine how the rednecks liked that:

“Them is screwin’ with the name of the group.”

“What is this page even about.”

So as you can see, karma is operating on the Internet, and often in hilarious ways.

Scott Walker Heckled Mercilessly During Visit To Philly–Leaves Without Finishing His Cheesesteak

Scott Walker decided to pay a visit to the City of Brotherly Love–Philadelphia–yesterday, and he’s probably sorry he ever showed his face in town.

While in Philly, Governor Walker stopped by Geno’s Steaks, one of the finest cheesesteak restaurants in the nation. And things were going relatively well for a moment or two until the protesters showed up with signs which read:

“Scott Walker sniffs his own poop” and “Scott Walker lives inside my butt.”

And that was just within the first few minutes! Another personcould be heard shouting:

“You suck.”

Hey, Scott, might be time to head on back to Wisconsin.

Adding to the overall dislike of Walker was the fact that he cut in line at Geno’s and then had the audacity to order his Philly cheesesteak with Amercian cheese! I’m pretty sure they’ve run people out of town for less in Philadelphia.

The reaction to his cheese choice online was immediate and mercliess. Here are a few of the comments:

“Scott Walker cut in line at Geno’s to order a cheesesteak with American cheese and no onions. He’s not getting out of Philly alive.”

“You get wizz or provolone, you don’t know how to order a cheese steak and you fail at panderiing.”

Not long after Walker announced his run for the GOP nomination, I wrote that he had next to no chance of being elected President, and I listed several reasons for believing that. You can now add bad cheesesteak etiquette to that list.

And a bit of friendly advice for Scott Walker: If you come to Georgia and order grits, for God’s sake don’t put sugar on them.

Sexual Assault

Which States Are Failing To Help Rape Victims? This Map Shows You

You may recall a report in USA Today a few months ago which revealed there were more than 70,000 untested rape kits across the United States. But that report only looked at about 1,000 police departments, and there are more than 18,000 police departments in America, meaning the 70,000 is just the tip of the iceberg.

Law and Order SVU  actress Mariska Hargitay formed a group called the JoyfulHeartFoundation and their End The Backlog program is aimed at bringing attention to the huge of untested rape kits across the country. This is a noble and much-needed effort.

Did you know that 68 percent of rapes go unreported in the United States each year? I didn’t. Only 2 percent of rapists  serve time in prison, and one of the primary reasons for that is that the evidence in hundreds of thousands of rape kits has never been tested. This is an insult to those who have been sexually violated.

End The Backlog reports:

“Right now, there is more we do not know about the backlog than we do know. Few state governments and no federal agencies track rape kit data.”

Despite all the information we already have, recently published Joyful Heart’s most recent attempt to get the word out. It’s called the Accountability Project, and it clearly identifies what states and jurisdictions have counted their rape kit backlogs and begun reform. All of this information has now been put on a map which you can see below.

What is most troubling is how many states have done absolutely nothing to address this problem.

According to the website, these 11 states have no idea how many untested rape kits they have statewide and haven’t even bothered to address the issue:

  • Alaska
  • Hawaii
  • Mississippi
  • Georgia
  • Wyoming
  • Nebraska
  • North Dakota
  • West Virginia
  • Rhode Island
  • New Hampshire
  • Vermont

This is unacceptable. The information compiled by EndtheBacklog also shows that  twenty-eight states have done absolutely nothing to help hundreds of thousands of rape victims. What message are we sending to those who have been raped? Do we truly care what happens to them, that they receive justice? Then we need to prove that.

Call, write, or email your Congressional representative by clicking on one of the links below. There is also a link for your state legislators.

As the father of a daughter, this issue is especially meaningful to me, and I have already let my elected officials know that it’s time for them to act. I hope you’ll join me.
